My Review Without Spoilers

Obsesion was not exactly what I expected. I thought it was going to be more horror, but not really. For me, it is more of an interesting thriller movie with some uncomfortable moments.

The story is basic, but in my opinion, they executed it well. Yeah, you can infer the ending since the start hahaha, but it has some good moments.

I actually enjoyed it, and saying that about the last horror/thriller movies I’ve seen means a lot hahaha. I had hope for this movie and, for me, it surpassed those expectations.

The Plot

The movie has Bear as the protagonist, a shy guy (not the Nintendo one hahaha), and for me he was the worst part of the movie hahaha, because he is such an idiot character.

The plot of the movie is that he finds something that can make a wish come true. He wishes that his friend falls in love with him, but he doesn’t know the consequences of his wish.

And that is basically where everything starts going wrong.

Bear

Bear is supposed to be the protagonist, but for me he is soooo frustrating to watch. He makes terrible decisions almost all the time.

Of course, in Spanish, the voice actor makes him so insufferable hahaha. In some moments, Nikki feels more reasonable than Bear because he makes the worst decisions from the start.

Yeah, he fucked up with a wish, but he makes so many more bad decisions that the wish almost feels like nothing hahaha.

Nikki

For me, the strongest part of the movie is not Bear. It is Nikki.

Nikki, who is the girlfriend, is a really great character in the movie. She is the most interesting one, and she has to be.

Compared to other movies, the main “villain” sometimes is not interesting enough, but in this case, the actress really does a great job. She makes you feel uncomfortable most of the time.

It is like a roller coaster of emotions because from the start you know that she isn’t okay, and from the start she has that same crazy energy that she has by the end. She really carries the movie.

Ian

Ian, Bear’s friend, is also an idiot hahaha. Same as Bear, he is a selfish character without any real contribution to the plot.

He is just the stupid selfish friend of the protagonist and that’s it. Honestly, Bear and Ian were really testing my patience hahaha.

Sarah

The second best character for me is Sarah. She feels like a true friend of the protagonist and she has more relevance in the story.

She knew that something was strange with the protagonist and his girlfriend, and she really tried to make sure that her friend was okay.

It also feels balanced between her and Nikki, while the idiot characters are Bear and Ian hahaha. Sarah was probably the character that made the movie feel a little more grounded for me.

She actually cared, and that made her stand out more.

Would I Recommend Obsesion?

I can recommend you this movie. I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I think it is okay if you watch it.

It is not the best horror movie ever. It is not even that scary most of the time. But as a thriller, I think it works.

It has uncomfortable moments, a crazy girlfriend that really carries the movie, a protagonist that makes you want to scream at the screen, and some scenes that actually feel intense.

For me, it was worth watching.

Now I will talk with a few spoilers down here, so if you don’t want to see spoilers, this is the time to close the post and come back later when you want to read it.

I will insert an image of a cat as the warning...

SPOILERS

At the start of the movie, I saw that the protagonist had an Android phone. Thanks to those curiosity channels I watched in the past, I remembered one thing:

When a person in a movie has an iPhone, that person is usually the good one and will probably not die.

So when I saw that detail at the start of the movie, I was like:

“Okay, this guy is going to die by the end.”

Hahaha.

I don’t watch a lot of movies, and this was the first time I actually noticed something like that while watching one.

Bear

For me, Bear was soooo frustrating to watch because he made the worst decisions ever. He changed the personality of the person he supposedly loved, and then he only cared about having sex with her???

Like, all the movie he was scared of her, but when he had sex with her, not anymore??

Man, I would be scared of her. If I knew my girlfriend was crazy as fuck like that, I would be scared of her giving me a bite on you know where hahaha, or something like that.

I understand that the wish he asked for was purely impulsive, and for real, no one would immediately think about the worst-case scenario. But still, how would you make that wish happen without all that craziness from the girlfriend if you were the protagonist?

Because the protagonist, and probably everyone watching the movie, wanted that love to be real. I was thinking that the best possible way to make the wish, knowing how the rule in the movie works, would be something like:

“Make her love for me start growing slowly and naturally, while she still stays herself. Don’t make her obsessed with me, and if it doesn’t work, then both of us can live our lives and that’s it.”

Because I would not force someone to love me, even if I had a wish.

I know for me it is important to find my one hahaha. You know? It’s like finding your Amy if you are Sheldon.

If you just wish it into existence, it loses all the effort and becomes the cheat way. And yeah, some people would probably take it, but for me, I don’t see it that way.

Also, why did he go back to his home at the end?? Like, man, you already know everything is wrong. You already know this is dangerous. Why would you go back???

I know the movie needed to get to the ending, but still, I was watching it like:

“Bro, what are you doing???”

But yeah, at that point I already accepted that Bear was going to make the worst possible decision every time hahaha.

Nikki

Another thing I want to mention is that the actress who played Nikki was so great. She really scared me with some of her reactions, and even in Spanish, her screams made me feel uncomfortable and freaked me out sometimes.

My favorite character was Nikki because she really made the movie interesting. She is the reason the movie works.

If Nikki was boring, the movie would probably feel really bad. But because she is so intense, uncomfortable, and unpredictable, she gives the movie a lot of energy.

Ian

Ian was an idiot since the start. Clearly, he liked the girl Bear was in love with, but he didn’t have the nuts to tell him.

And even after Bear told him the wish he asked for, the dumb friend asked for a billion dollars.

But why??

Help your friend, asshole hahaha.

Then he died literally 5 minutes after making that wish. Honestly, Ian felt like a selfish character from the beginning.

Same as Bear, he thinks about himself first, and that makes him really annoying to watch.

Sarah

My second favorite character was Sarah. Man, her death was so intense.

It was the only moment that really scared me for real because you knew something was going to happen, but the way Nikki arrived and killed her was so intense.

I really felt bad for that character because she was the only one who truly cared about her friend. And yeah, she liked him, but she still cared for him as a friend.

She was trying to understand what was happening. She was trying to help. And then she died because Bear was an idiot.

That part really made me feel bad.

Final Thoughts With Spoilers

So yeah, those were my impressions of the movie hahaha. Do you think something similar about my “review” hahaha?

For me, Obsesion is not perfect, but it was entertaining. It has a basic story, but it works. It has some predictable things, but it also has good moments.

The protagonist is frustrating, the friend is an idiot, Sarah deserved better, and Nikki was clearly the best part of the movie.

I can recommend it. I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I think it is okay if you watch it.
